F1 Race-Used Part for Sale Item: F1 Wheel Restraint Cable (Wheel Tether System) Car/Engine: Arrows A21 F1
Since 1998, FIA regulations have required wheel tether systems to reduce the risk of wheel separation in high-energy crashes. Each wheel is connected to the survival cell by several tethers integrated into the suspension components.
These tethers are made of Zylon (poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole)), a high-performance thermoset polymer with a tensile strength exceeding 5.8 GPa and excellent resistance to thermal degradation. Current FIA standards (Article 10.3.6 of the Technical Regulations) require two independent tethers per wheel, each capable of withstanding a tensile load of 70 kN for 3 seconds without breaking.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and dynamic sled testing are used by teams to validate compliance with FIA load cases, including oblique impact scenarios. This system is essential for energy management and projectile reduction, preventing wheels from turning into dangerous debris and improving safety for drivers and trackside areas.
